Identifying inherited netuske couple

Postby Cathey » Mon Apr 23, 2018 4:07 pm

Dear All-

I am downsizing & working to thoughtfully assess beauty handed down to me. My mother or grandmother had this netsuke couple. I have learned from your wonderful and hope you can help me further.

I am certain the metal stand is a late addition to the original carving. There clearly is a story in their faces, skull, snake and bag (dog?) at their feet. It seems to have the layering of ivory, not wood. Doesn’t seem plastic. Weighs 2-5/8oz (74 g) and 2-1/4” tall, 1-3/4” wide. It has a red lacquer signature on the bottom.

Can you help me identify its period? Mythology or story? Value?

I am indebted to the kindness of strangers and will repay the generosity of your expertise forward.

Respectfully,
Cathey

The figure on the right holding a skull is Benten, one of the 7 Shichi-fuku-jin (7 Deities of Good Fortune) - the Buddhist patron goddess of literature and music and the other figure is Daruma - the founder of the Zen tradition of Buddhism in China, portrayed holding a fly whisk or hossu - a short staff of wood with bundled hair or hemp. The stick is believed to protect the wielder from desire and also works as a way of ridding areas of flies without killing them. The hossu is regarded as symbolic of a Zen master's authority to teach and transmit Buddha Dharma.

Please forgive my light hearted edit. After seeing your post above I just couldn't shake Family Guy from my mind. We may have found Chris's true mother!
