Hi Carlos.
And the three pupillas? One inlay and two only hole?
Uncustomary, but interesting.

Do we have other examples with similar placement of the Mei?

The new photos Philip provided certainly makes this more obvious. A good spot never the less Peter!

It looks like the artist couldn't decide if the pupils should look to the right, left, or centre.

I had a look around but couldn't find one. Maybe someone else will have better luck.

Here is a photo of another Oni by a Masanao of Ise. Only could find this frontal shot. But useful for comparison anyway.

I mention this because a) the fundoshi is considered unclean in Japan and b) he is sitting right on top of the Mei which again seems to go against the Japanese sensibility.
If someone can find other similar examples, where for instance the artist wishes for some reason to appear extra humble or humorous, I stand ready to be corrected.

Hi PhillipRVA,
I also like this no - He is compact and yet very powerful attitude. The beans on his back is why he is covering his head. He gets plummeted by them, which scares him out of anyones home who wants to rid it of his mischief!
I am a bit troubled about his eye- I am wondering if they were tampered with. Perhaps Clive would have something to offer regarding those. I agree with Piers that the Mei is strangely placed- but someone might have an idea regarding that, or perhaps another will surface to dispel concern over an added signature.
Very nice netsuke and it has been fun looking through them. Thanks for sharing.
Judy
