Anraku(sai) netsuke

Postby Curt » Tue Nov 14, 2017 6:16 pm

I was floundering on a netsuke Facebook group where I posted a netsuke by Shūkōsai Anraku and was told it was Chinese tourist stuff, so pretty downtrodden until Martyn rode in on a white horse and gave me hope.

Welcome, Curt.
I admit I'm one of those people who does not care for the Anrakusai stain on some pieces and sometimes for me border on looking like an NLO. But maybe those are the inferior school pieces. Anyway, none of us get it right every time! You might want to find a copy of the INS Journal with David White's Anrakusai article. I'm prety sure it is one of those digitized for INS members on the Netsuke.org website.

Hi Curt,

welcome to the Lounge !
We are sure you'll find hours and hours of reading material here with interesting and thought-provoking discussions.
Also we look forward to seeing some of the pieces that you have collected some years ago.

The Anraku article by our INS President David White is called "Shukosai Anraku(sai) : An Often Overlooked, Playful Master Carver".
It is in the INS Journal Volume 32/2 of summer 2012.

Hi Curt- I'm not a contributing member of the facebook Netsuke group, but I did just go over there and had a look at your Anrakusai piece, and the thread of comments. I have to say that after looking through the INS article cited in this thread, I'm tending to think yours is also by this artist. It shows the same syrupy stain that is heavily rubbed off on the high points, the same type of elongated, yet bulbous nose present in other figures and certainly a similar predilection for pattern-embellished objects. The key fret, and petal-like motif on yours is duplicated on other pieces. One could also draw a comparison to other figure and object groupings where he plays with a sense of scale between the two.
If not by Anraku or associated carvers, then it is a clever forgery, done with the intent to copy his style and finish.

Thank you all for your warm welcome and helpful suggestions. I'm a mid-west gallery owner and had received a netsuke tiger as a gift. I found them fascinating and collected over a period of 10 years - that was 20 years ago.

I collected netsuke that looked interesting or I was attracted to, since I'm an art dealer. That is probably a bad combination, but as I share these pieces with you, I'm sure I'll find the stinkers in the bunch, and hopefully a couple of nice ones as well.

Thank you again Martyn, and this forum as well.

Welcome to the INS forum Curt.

FWIW.. I too believe your netsuke to be a genuine Anraku or at least from his associated circle.

Hi Curt,

Here is an interesting example, signed Anraku. Note again the same specific stain we attribute to Anraku (click on image for larger view).

For any INS members, there is a thread some 7 pages long with examples of work, and discussions about this carver. There is also the full article written by David White included in that thread - viewtopic.php?f=12123&t=6944365

Thank you for this information. I have one other piece that is stained like this of a fox mask drummer, I'll post it in the future. I'm not a fan of the really dark stain, but like my little man and cauldron - but I love this fish! I'll read up when I have a chance. Thanks again for the scholarship.
Curt
