Ojime

Postby jbjtennyo » Fri May 20, 2016 11:42 am

I see that the ojime thread is locked, so decided to start one. Please do post yours here as well.
I have not sought ojime, but did fall in love with this coiled rat that I found on Neil Holton's website. I was surprised when I received it, at how very tiny it is in comparison to most ojime. It sits just a hair over 1cm. 19C ivory

The first topic, Introduction to Ojime, which is locked was simply titled Ojime (my mistake which is now corrected).
Full figured ojime are much less common than those that are etched or deeply engraved subjects. Very nice, Judy, we'll done in such a tiny format.

Re: Ojime Butterfly Dancer

Judy, at just over 1cm, I'm just now realizing how tiny your rabbit really is.
This is a butterfly dancer in mixed metal with traces of lacquer or enamel that I also got from Neil. I thought it quite small but it measures 19mm tall. I think due to it's flatness it seems much smaller. The himotoshi is just behind the head and exits beside the right foot at the bottom.

I believe this ivory piece represents a paper lantern.

The six famous poets. Ono no Komachi and Ariwara no Narihira are the easy ones to identify.

What lovely ojime these are,Alan! I really love the butterfly dancer--the back of it being very elegant with the colors on the wings--are those colored inlays of some kind or enamel? SO pretty! Has Anne worn here ojime necklace?

This is my only "Other" ojime, signed by Gyokuzan, it is in keeping with the style of carving and signature as pictured in LAZ. Mine is three rabbits, one of them piebald. In Laz, the ojime pictured is piebald puppies. Very similarly carved and detailed. 19C ivory Sadly mine is cracked, but has been stabilized.

Just so you can see the difference in size. The coiled rat is just a hair over 1cm and the rabbit ojime is 2cm.
Seeing is believing!!

Judy, whenever I suggest she wear her ojime necklace she decides I need to be working on one with all metal pieces. Some day I'll learn to keep my mouth shut.
Great size comparison beside your rabbit piece. I think there's a Gyokuzan on her necklace. I'll have to sneak it out for a photo to avoid spending money...
