old photo of pipe vendor

Postby dougsanders » Thu Mar 22, 2018 2:37 pm

I came across this photo in a book I've been reading depicting a street vendor of pipes, pipecases, pouches, etc. I found it interesting that complete ensembles were displayed (ashtray netsuke, pipecase and pouch) as prominently as individual items. The date is given to be mid 1880's. Perhaps others have seen this photo, but it was new to me.

Thanks, Doug.
On the top rack the pipe cases seem to be sagemono suspended from the ashtray netsuke along with the takako-ire while the pipe cases in the second row function like sashi netsuke.

Good observation Alan, I missed that. There are a few yatate strewn about as well if you expand the photo and look closely. I also like the abacus on the left side of the display, near the boy's knee.
Items I'm trying to figure out are the leaf, or ovoid shaped things in several trays in the lower right quadrant of the display.

Neil, maybe I'm looking at the wrong things but do you mean they are pouches of tobacco similar to this?

Hi Doug,

Thanks for sharing the image.

I see Tonkotsu in the lower right. I've blown up that section in the image below. Is it these ovoid objects you are referring to?

I second Neil's reply. However if I got there first, Neil would have thought the vendor sold dust, and walked on by

Sorry about the quality of this following image. It's no good for studying the items. But another example of a seller with significant smoking stock. I did request a better version a few weeks ago, but frustratingly, the source forgot where he found it!!

The following speaks volumes about Japanese class and these vendors at the period the photo was taken. I find their demure stature a tad heart jerking.
