Dave, I miss the typical great divine earlobes and the attributes.
Maybe another karako with a cap.

Hotel amidst a funny children's group, Daikoku is separate and looks disgruntled.

There was a saying/joke that implied that as childhood ends and adulthood beckons it all gets very complicated. Happiness (Hotei) needs to be created when you are an adult. Money (Daikoku) needs be found when you are an adult but to live like a child free of these worries, money has no value and happiness comes as natural as the seasons. As you can see both gods aren't too happy.

Lovely case....a Tonkotsu case over a tobakoire I think.

Perhaps a sales product of the hobby gardener that Martyn has described.

Leaves yes but what else has me totally stumped.. a very odd looking shape indeed.. presuming that's how it was carved and is not the result of some damage that was then been rounded off.. maybe as Doug suggests, a budding Camilia flower (??) :?

Not tea Leaves, is a branch of Citrus with a fruit, this variety is called Buddha's hand(Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis) or in japanese 'bushukan' is a popular gift at the end of the year.

Dave, I also love your pipe case. On my little cellphone last night, it looked like they all had mustaches, and that confused me a little--but on my computer now I see more clearly.
I love stag antler, and the position of these karako and Gods is very humorous.
Looking at the hands of the highest Karako, he seems to be teasing Hotei by scratching his bald head. The missing element of Hotei's earring might be hinting at his irritated, disheveled and unhappy state at the moment. And Daikoku looks as if he has just had it with the childs play and wants them all to go home! Too much a business man to deal with such silliness! It is a lively piece, and again, I love the material.

Mamushi, I think you've found the solution.
Here is a citrus fruit with leaves.
Do you know a special interpretation of this combination: Citrus and Tee or sake utensils?

To me, the fourth face from the top appears to be a female.

A handsome and yet very simple kiseruzutsu.
The braiding is not bamboo, but seems to be made of varnished papermache.
The ivory carving is also only resin.
Created for poorer people who want to own something beautiful.

A lovely invention, Klaus. Any idea when such a thing would have been made?

With more pictures I would like to show the quality of the execution.
The two parts fit together perfectly and close "airtight".
I am grateful for any speculation about age.
