Sorry to be lazy on this occasion with references.

I remember hearing or reading a number of times, that resin was in fact an expensive commodity when introduced to Japan and considered a luxury. Are others here under that same understanding?

That being said. When you say the top of the case was carved from resin, do you mean plant resin or synthetic resin? Plant resin has been around since the dawn of time, synthetic resin is, as I understand it, a 20thc creation.

Was plant resin being used in the 19thc as a substitute to ivory?

A lot of questions. The things I can say:
The material does not resist the hot needle test, has no cast seam, no air bubbles.
The carved(?) scene forms a connected unity all around.

Does resin lend itself well to being around an activity that creates a lot of heat. Its a marvel its survived.

Klaus.. very interesting and curious piece, could please provide some quality close ups of the "weaving" and the top so I might better understand the character of the materials.

Yes, the hole is deep and the edges are curved upward.

Is this what also identified it as resin? These pock mark defects are quite small compared to what we usually see.
