Here is a little one I picked up the other day. Nothing special, but it does have allusions within the simple design. Antler with probably water buffalo horn inlay. The Sakura flower is a motif found everywhere, being Japan’s national flower. As I understand, it symbolizes the fleeting beauty of life, breathtakingly here one moment, and gone the next, and ever shall it be.
The complete opposite to the Judaeo Christian Islamic idea of the eternal nature of Jahweh, God, Allah
As it was in the beginning
Is now
And ever shall be.

Very simple yet very effective Piers.
Saku means to bloom but also to smile/laugh - fleeting pleasures/moments of beauty enjoyed while you can.

Piers has already seen this one - possibly a chidori (plover) and lacquered tea ceremony objects. I had to carve a new peg for it as the original was missing.

Love it John - it's an ashtray.

A few years ago I handled a very similar example with Andy Jordan.

Is this the one you are referring to from Andy, Martyn ?

That's the one guys. It's been on reserve for years. It's not like it was expensive. Someone being tight

Quite right - now my memory refreshed Andy's example not an ashtray, unlike John's.
