Wow. Doug is that yours? It looks like very early nagoya work. Can you share more pics?

Hi Martyn,

The signature is Shubokusai who was probably a pupil of one of the Shugetsu's. Some other photos attached below.

NK Davey states that it is "Shuri" and that it is a misreading for "Tanri".

Thank you Peter.

What a great composition. Cracker of a netsuke. The facial expression well worth sharing.

This is the first time I've seen this piece, or heard of that artist. How come? He's good. Do you know of any other works by this artist?

Peter.. Just noticed Jan's post. Actually although I can't find anything on the artist, I can see the Kanji can read Shuri - 舟 李

Jan/Martyn,

Thanks for your feedback, I must admit I haven’t done any research on this and was just quoting from the attribution provided to me by Neil H.

Stuff sells quick. You beat me to it. Wonderful patina to the wood. Congratulations. A piece to be proud of.

Thanks Martyn, I bought it from him some time ago actually, at least 5 maybe 6 years so have no excuses for not doing some research yet!
