mask of Okama

Postby Victor » Sat Sep 23, 2017 12:40 pm

Good afternoon, I have recently bought this netsuke, at a local auction. I think it's quite nicely carved and I'm impressed with the back and the green insert in the himotoshi. The mask is 5.2cms tall. Once again I would appreciate help with the signature as I can't find anything close in my limited reference books.

That's a nice one, Victor, and indeed the back is attractive as well.

The signature may read "Shugetsu", followed by the kanji for 'made by' (last character)
In MCI there are 6 carvers listed with this name. It might be one of the followers of the originator.

Without seeing it, it's most likely green stained bone or ivory.

Many thanks Doug and Piers, I suspected dyed bone was the answer but needed to be sure. 've seen several Shugetsu masks on the net since my initial enquiry but I'm really pleased with this one especially the quality of the back
