boy mounting a horse

Postby Victor » Wed Sep 20, 2017 10:03 am

Good morning, I have recently added this netsuke to my collection. I would welcome members comments regarding the netsuke and help reading the signature

Nice Netsuke Victor, measures and clear pictures would help but for now I think the boy is washing the horse

Any himotoshi?

Try 赤城 山陽 東陽 Akagi, Sanyo, Toyo.

My personal feeling is that you should not put too much faith in these.

There might be another Kanji after 東陽? (guessing 斎 or 彫 or a kakihan? )

Good evening, I was asked to provide some better pictures and to indicate the size of this item. I have done my best to provide some clearer pictures, the one I'm having real difficulty with is the signature, but I've tried. The netsuke is 33mm tall x 37mm wide.

Good morning Piers, thanks for your ideas regarding the signature. In answer to your question, there is no obvious himotoshi but is it feasible it has a natural one between the legs and tail of the horse?

Owing to the broad base, Victor, this surely has to be a small okimono. How could this be used as a Netsuke, even with strings legs tied to the legs? A fun subject.
