Alan,

Thx for the kind words :)

Hopefully Neil do not mind me showing my first netsuke bought in dec. 2015. It was bought from the same guy who later sold me the manju. At the time I did not know anything about netsuke and I am still reading and reading my books to get some knowledge within this field.

Again this is my own photos (not shown here before) :)

Steve, I must confess, I use both terms and for me they are one and the same, but I am sure there is a difference. Regarding who would have commissioned such a work of art, I can certainly say one thing for sure. They were very wealthy! Can you imagine the amount of time needed to allow each individual application of MOP. The task would have been massive. In 2017, you'll need to find a related netsuke, perhaps you can share this time next year.

Congrats Roy, well done for 2016. My apologies once again for how long the CITES permit took on the mask :(

I'm a little late to the party. Probably my favorite of 2016 is this glum-looking antler Karasu-Tengu, sitting in pine branches. Measures 1.8" tall. I have no idea on the age or maker. I wouldn't be shocked if it turned out to be a contemporary piece.

If you bought it on eBay and from Switzerland, the odds are in favor of contemporary, I would say. Still a charming carving, you just have to figure out what that tengu is doing in that pine tree with that scroll...

As Vlad said, the combination of elements should raise some questions. Did the maker just combine some common Japanese elements into a cute "Frankenstein" production?

Here is my favourite (also my first) netsuke:

I believe it is a 20th century piece signed "Sosai".

I could not resist and bought a staghorn Netsuke from this contemporary production. It is not my "favorit 2016", but I like it and do not regret the purchase.

A Japanese motif (Hotei tries to roll a Tama)
Probably a own creation from the carver (I have not yet seen anything comparable)
A round and closed piece with good Himotoshi, good to use as Netsuke.
My favorite material and a pretty decent execution.

- MOD EDIT - The discussion following Klaus' post was focused on the modern Ebay (fake) pieces. It has been moved to a separate thread, which can be found here :

This way we can keep this thread about 'our favourite finds of 2016'. - END MOD EDIT (Oishii)

Thank you aunetsuke for posting your netsuke and welcome to the lounge. I am not really familiar with contemporary netsuke, it does remind me of the one posted prior by RoyT. Glad to have you sharing with us!

I want to share this cute rat on chestnut netsuke, lot 2326 from Van Ham. Haven't received it yet but still...

The price was a little over my limit, but couldn't resist... It reminds me of the extraordinary rat with chestnut sold at Bonhams few years ago by Goho. The general shape of the rat is quite similar, as well as fur treatment, although mine is of-course a less-cute example, without ukibori on the chestnut, and those massive eyes and very lively tails (Bonhams says it's amber, but it appears to me as rhinoceros horn?)
