Favourite finds of 2016

Postby neilholton » Wed Dec 14, 2016 5:33 pm

As the year draws to a close, thought it might be interesting to share our favourite finds of 2016.

I was delighted to have found a netsuke to match my mechanical sagemono by Gyokumin.

Very nice Neil!

I would have to go with my bamboo toad as my favorite find of 2016. It is the best use of a bamboo node I have ever come across... so far!

Sincere congratulations Neil and Jill, is a pleasure to observe and enjoy both pieces...
Excellence in netsuke art don't need signature or pedigree, or age, only quality, aesthetics, beauty.

Luigi, how about posting Lucia's favorite of 2016? Or will it be a Christmas gift yet to come? :)

Jill, if you only found that frog this year, for me you've had a super year. Great use of material.

If there indeed are matches made in Heaven, yours is definitely one of them, Neil! Do you think it also comes from the same workshop and time period as the sagemono? What is it, BTW - a tonkotsu, an inro, or something else? It doesn't look too large not much larger than the netsuke.

That is a great find, Jill! I have never seen anything like this carved from the bamboo root. Would've loved having it in my collection.

I have added quite a few nice netsuke to my collection this year, but talking about matches, these two practically mirror images of the two of my favorite pieces I already had made my year! :)

Neil - it's a solid match. Bizarre workmanship. That would have taken one hell of a personality to strut around with that set dangling from the sash!

Jill - your choice is really mature taste. It's a wonderful Netsuke, and I echo Neil sentiments regarding the artists clever use of the material.

Vlad - not happy enough to own one rare model - now you buy their partners in the market too! Leave some for us

Right! Another example of never suggesting there to be a unique subject in netsuke, The first sleeping servant was from the Trower collection. The second one looks even older than the first!

Thanks for sharing these extraordinary pieces, Neil, Jill and Vlad !
Each one is very special in its own way. Jill, what a powerful toad.
