Inro lacquer signature help

If anyone has Wrangham to hand, would you recognize this cartouche? Red lacquer, it appears to have an initial box compartment at the top. Terribly faded. I think I can see the remains of 人 or 内 in the top section...? The composition is two rats or mice.

Many thanks!

Dear Piers,

This red cartouche reminds me on Shiomi (Masanari, Masakage) works, also the place of the signature, laterally below near the himotoshi and the togidashi maki-e work is a typical style. The design with rats I have seen from Shiomi already a few times.

Here is a link for a possible readable signature https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/23270/lot/136/

Thomas, that is just the sort of lead that I was hoping for.

The proportions and placement certainly match. Now I can go back and cross-check to see if any parts of the signature match 塩見政誠 Shiomi (also sometimes pronounced Shihomi) Masanari, or Masakage 塩見政景. Kyoto Masanari was the son of Harumasa. The names Masanari and Masakage continued to be used throughout Edo.

The black eyes and silver feet of this mouse look just like mine, although the inro is in poor condition.

Matthew, a very happy 2018 to you too. Thank you kindly for this illustrative and informative entry. All three signed Masanari, but very different styles of writing. Look at the left 'hen' 言 of 誠. And the top left of 鹽 Shio.

(I really enjoy helping people out here whenever I can, but it is hard for me to ask for help like this. Much appreciated, the two of you.) :)

I'm glad to be of help. If there's any thing else you want from Wrangham's just let me know.
Don't think twice about asking.
You are far and away into the plus column on help given vs help received in this forum!
