Hello. Could anyone help me translate this Edo era Netsuke Signature ? Thank you for your time. The material is Silver and the characters are Pheonix and Dragon.

Hi Maxim, there seem to be two name plaques in the top photo. Unfortunately the clarity of your bottom shot under magnification is not really helpful. You can not get any clearer shots of the two panels?
Piers

Size is something.

This is posted in the Netsuke Facebook group with debate whether it is Edo at all. One member has stated this (or these) are seen every few weeks on eBay.

I posted this on Facebook. This is the one the person said he thought was posted on eBay more than once. It was listed twice on ebay. The first time the seller asked for Museum type money to sell it. It is certainly Edo era Japanese anabori Netsuke pierce-carved of Silver. Samurai Pheonix and Dragon carving.

Are you sure it's not cast?

Why is it certainly Edo period? I'd like to learn more about metal netsuke and you seem very certain.

Please show the himotoshi? If it is indeed a netsuke then it would have to have some place to attach a cord. Do you agree?

It's a better candidate for an ojime but we dont know the size. But using the natural openings for himotoshi would be unlikely.

Alan, he gave the size in the Facebook Netsuke group. 1.75 inches. Too large for an ojime although that was my first thought. He won't be back I am sure. There were about 40 or 50 comments on fb regarding this and the consensus is that it is Chinese, not a netsuke, it's cast, and modern. He argued that the many collectors and noted dealers he showed this to told him it was Edo. Also he has received offers for this. If you look at the dragon, it doesn't look Japanese.

Thanks, Jill. I have to wonder why he thought it would change on our forum.
