Klaus, out of curiosity what characteristics made the dealer think the shell was a repair?

The shell looks original, after comparing it to similar models by Kagetoshi.

In my opinion my piece is in its original state.

To explain the background.

I bought this Netsuke 1987 at Christies London, it was the Bushell auction, part 1. (A London dealer makes the bid for me)

A few weeks later I and a lot of other collectors got (without request!) from another very well-known London dealer a description of the bad condition of the Bushell pieces. There were several pages and a lot of pieces.
In my piece a very great damage was described, which is now obscured by the addition of the shell.

At first I was unsettled and unhappy,
Later, I was just angry about the attempted ruin my piece.
Now it does not bother me any more, but I still have to think of this letter when I take the Netsuke into my hand.

Sounds to me like sour grapes from the dealer as he didn't win any of these Bushell pieces!

That definitely may be the case!
