Ashtray netsuke

Postby AFNetsuke » Wed Nov 01, 2017 9:28 pm

The 9 Nov '17 Bonhams auction has a beautifully done ivory, bronze and wood okimono of a woodcutter seated, resting and holding a pipe, tobacco pouch and attached "portable ashtray". I wonder why they didn't just say ashtray "netsuke"?

It's a good illustration of how they would be posed, and naturally used to tap out a kisseru pipe. I must have around 15 or 20 of these in different materials. (Also note the type of kinchaku purse.)

I recognized the purse right away, as one that you own and have shown us before. Great connection. Perhaps a popular style. Was it due to its soft nature and manageable nature?

If you have a leather purse, ie tough resilient material, and you wish to be able to pull it tight with drawstrings, but also keep it practically shaped and attractive in appearance, then this pattern must have been one intelligent solution, Judy. :)
The concertina shape would have allowed for more of whatever to be carried inside.

On the left of the Zabuton are some leather concertina type purses, with one however of cloth material; on the right are leather concentric folding purses pulled flat, again with a cloth example for contrast. All out of Japanese antiques markets but in some cases restrung where the original string has perished.

These seem to be the two main purse patterns. It could be that cloth examples are rarer because they have mainly perished, and perhaps leather ones were more common. (?)

As always, Piers, you show things that we in the western world rarely see, but especially have an opportunity to handle. A rich palette of items you always share with us...Thanks so much!

My pleasure Judy. It's funny how these things accumulate. 8-)
I am just choosing one to wear tomorrow at the Daimyo Gyoretsu in Yakage. (Pronounced Yakka-gay) The little Inro, perhaps, from an umbrella Netsuke?
