Another takaramono netsuke (though far inferior in my opinion to GRHR's example) came up as lot 605 from the Kolodotschko 5 Lempertz Auction earlier this year (unsold). It was described as mid 19th C and is shown below -

Hi John,
Thanks for posting the pic - I've been looking for similar netsukes and found the two below that also depict elements of the takaramono and are interesting although both are very different from the one I have.

In the list on the previous page the hat is described as 'Kakure-gasa', or invisibility hat.

The description for the straw cloak is 'the lucky rain coat, Kakure Mino, protection against evil spirits', and that may be, but the direct and proper translation of 'Kakure-mino' is actually the same as the hat, ie invisibility cloak.

This reminds me of the sometime desire of a great lord to be able to travel incognito, to have the facility to leave his post and mix with ordinary folk without drawing attention, a recurring theme throughout Asian culture. In another culture, "Mon Dieu, donnez-moi la médiocrité", said Mirabeau, aware that the French Revolution was about to sweep him too to the guillotine. (Please God, give me mediocrity.)

Size is something.
