A friend on another forum quotes the following today, from a member of PMJS: "I have read that the celebration of the Eucharist (Symbolic eating of the body & drinking of the blood of Christ) by the "Apostolic Vicars" who had first entered Japan in 1540's, begat a rumour after some 15 or so years that they were in fact Cannibals, hence the reluctance to allow them into certain areas and the attempt to ban them in 1565 and 1568.
This rumour was also apparently rife in China, the Phillipines and parts of South America."

Does this not tie in with some of the discussion regarding the barbarian figures portrayed in silk seals? :geek:
