Subject Quiz

Postby Oishii » Mon Jan 29, 2018 2:58 pm

Hello everyone,

Anyone in for a nice bit of subject sleuthing ? :)

this piece coming up at auction, signed Hojitsu, depicts a subject that is rarely seen in netsuke, but it is not uncommon in Ukiyo-e prints.
A wood piece of this subject, signed Sosui, was sold at Christies a couple of years ago for over £ 5K.
Any ideas about the story ?

This depicts Nikki Danjo, the character from the kabuki story ‘The Disputed Succession’ (Meiboku Sendai hagi), with a small scroll held in his mouth, turning into the rat shown at his feet.

I did not know the story. Thanks, Jan and John for an interesting video, especially the wardrobe chaging.

Well done, John ! I knew you would find it ;)
In this Kabuki play, Nikki Danjo transforming himself into a rat, so that he can steal a scroll with a list of people involved in a conspiracy. The netsuke captures the moment where he transforms back into a human, still holding the scroll in his mouth.

Here are a few woodblock prints referring to that Kabuki play :
Natori Shunsen, 1886-1960
Sawamura Gennosuke IV as Nikki Danjo

Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) Nikki Danjo Naonori Changing into a Rat Series :

and this is the fine Sosui piece, sold by Christies a few years ago.

I handled this piece in Victory Topper's home in Toronto many years ago. It was one of his favorites. It is pictured in Hurtig's Masterpieces of Netsuke Art, #697

Great materials and great learning session. Many thanks. (This could explain a woodblock print I have. Will check!)

More sleuthing anyone?
Which tale is referred to by the pensive figure depicted here? Who is he and why is he so lost in thought?
More pics to follow much later if required!

Quick guess on balance of possibilities... Urashima Taro? If that is correct then I can answer your other questions. :)
