button-eyed goddess?

Postby Bakurae » Wed May 17, 2017 1:29 am

Would anyone want to propose an identity for this rather formidable lady, with sizable nuggets of horn for eyes? I acquired her as Seiobo, and have no better idea, but the usual attributes--a basket, peaches, a phoenix headdress--are missing. Do her hairstyle and costume, with two layers of saw-tooth-edged mantles (or sleeves), belong to a particular character or period? Her robe is rubbed smooth but there are faint traces of clouds, so I assume she's an immortal. Suggestions welcome!

Intriguing question, Alison.

Seiobo holds an uchiwa fan in this Netsuke representation in the National Museum in Liverpool...

Thanks, Piers! Is the Liverpool example by Masatoshi? Looks like him, anyhow.
I'm also intrigued by the wide, ridged collar my lady wears. I've seen collars like it on karako, but not on any female figures that I can remember. Does that belong to women's costume, even just court ladies, at a particular time? Is there a good source on historic Japanese costume that might explain it?
If it's not something even you would know instantly, it's clearly not an easy problem.
Again thanks

The uchiwa is an attribute of Seiobo (Joly). She is also often portrayed with a high coiffure wearing elaborate Chinese robes.

Do you think those big horn eyes are original to the carving? They feel somewhat out of character for me. The Liverpool example includes a hossu as well which is not often depicted with Seiobo.

A fair question, Alan--the large eyes are unusual. for sure. The only similar ones I can think of were on a well-worn Jittoku with a broom that Neil Holton sold a few months back. While I see no evidence that they are replacements, they are certainly exceptional. Has anybody seen other netsuke , hopefully of identifiable origins, with similar eyes?

Not sure what it is, but I am sensing similarities with this Chokwaro/horse on p.5 of Vlad's thread. (?) For reference anyway.

Thanks, Piers, that's a start. Also the toad with Gama Sennin on p. 6 of the same thread. If we can just find a netsuke with similar eyes whose approximate date and place of origin can be figured out....will keep looking. Again thanks!

So do you reckon that the eyes have it? (ayes) :D

Or is the answer in the clothing?
