I'd appreciate any thoughts you might have on this one coming up to auction.
Is it Hattara Sonja (Sennin with a white tiger often sitting on a rock but with a staff or sceptre)?
Any opinions as to age and material (and the bubbly black dots on it)?
The faces appear off to me.
Was the neck damaged?

The bubbly black stuff on the front of the netsuke looks like a disguise for crack plugs. I see what you mean about the neck, yeah I would think repaired. There are other members with more knowledge in that area. Love the tigers face!

Hi,

The material is walrus. The little circular inserts are most likely original to the piece. They are to fill in a crack that might well of developed whilst the artist carved. I've seen that sort of restoration in walrus before.

It's probably from the hand of rogetsu, or guys working with him. If you do a search on the forum you'll find out more about the artist.

Mid to late 19th.

It's a nice piece then, but it's too bad about the serious damage.
I was thrown by the non-sennin, more workmanlike smock attire of the man (as well as the "cute" face of the man).
Rogetsu looks like an interesting artist.
