Unique, very rare, rare, common

When I saw the little flat fish some weeks ago, I made up my mind to think: It is a unique piece, never seen before. There are only a few natural fish skin netsuke known. They all are rare. But this one is rarer than rare. Simply unique.

What a misjudging. Now we see the large size version, so not unique. But very, very rare!

This is how it is in the netsuke world. On a certain day a netsuke comes up, which I did never see before. A month later a similar one shows up.
Let me conclude: There are no unique netsuke. There will be a second or a third one, hidden in collections or not even. May be together with toys in a tatami room's corner. We will never know.

The whole scale between rarity and common is large. There are hundreds, may be thousands of oxes, hoteis, daruma, and even they are different.

All I want to say is, I am happy to see these two flat fish netsuke, not unique, but very, very rare,

Reinhard

However, I'm still waiting to see another one of these young "ladies" emerge from the sea.

Alan, I remember your little girl friend very well. (Ex Mang and Scott Meredith) Maybe you could bring her to a 'show and tell' sometime. Would love to meet her personally  ....I have a feeling she may be truly unique.
