Bone Netsuke

Postby onimh » Sun Jun 05, 2016 4:41 pm

It just occurred to me that I don't recall ever seeing a "genuine" netsuke made of bone. [Not antler, horn, tusk, etc... but truly bone]
Are there any?
If not, isn't it safe to say that any netsuke described as such are either NLOs or ivory netsuke being described and sold illegally?

I was also sent a link to the Mang collection which included a bone sennin netsuke selling for 5 figures.
Thank you for the responses.

Most of the bone netsuke I've handled were relatively low end. The majority of those advertised on the Internet for sales are intentionally misidentified as you suggest. Good ones exist though.

I recall that Antonio had a Manju that was carved of bone, and it was a map of Japan on the face as I recall. I have since seen a couple of others as well. So you know, a bone netsuke has small dark spots over the surface--I know Clive could explain it better. I will see if I can find an image for you.

Those little dark spots are the canals of the osteons.

Thank you Alan, I could not remember what they were--just that they were a strong feature of bone.

I knew I would find one if I kept looking. This one in Virginia Atchley's collection. A bone manju of a map. Notice the creamy white color with spotting -the canals of the osteons! :D
