Ryan, I really enjoyed seeing all your Bizen ware netsuke. My favorite of all of them is the Tengu, which seems to be a more rare subject matter for ceramics-- only because I see so many Darumas, etc , but don't recall seeing Tengu before. I really like him.
There are many ceramic and porcelain pieces that, when you shake them there is a rattle, generally from something that was shaped by a puncture-like a breathing hole or a himotoshi possibly- the puncture piece didn't fall out, but stayed inside. I have a few Lladro porcelain that were gifts many years ago that rattle for this reason.

Great examples of Bizen-ware Ryan - I particularly like the tengu emerging from the egg!

Your netsuke of ''A Bizen-ware ceramic netsuke of an elderly Ono no Komachi.'' is more likely to be a younger pipe smoking woman sitting on her bundle of brushwood ,from the village of O-hara. Most of the occupants of this area were employed in collecting and selling firewood.
''Oharahame'' women wearing traditional farming dress sell firewood and vegetables from carts around the village. You can see them at the Oharahame Matsuri (O-hara Women's Festival) in the last 2 weeks of May.

Do you know which O-hara that is John? There are many around Japan, including a famous one in north-east Okayama Prefecture where Miyamoto Musashi was said to have been born.
