The material could be Kurogaki, black persimmon. As to age, well, consulting my gut and taking a complete stab in the dark I would say Meiji at least but quite possibly Edo. It's completely un-self conscious and not designed to appeal to the West. Age alone can mean little though. I like it, personally.

Size is something.
