Hello all. I'm very much a novice, but this seemed like the right place to ask. Bought this at an estate sale, and wondered if it could be a netsuke. I believe it is made out of wood, and there does seem to be a grain pattern. I would certainly like to know more about it. Hope the pictures are adequate. Thanks.

Welcome to the INS forum! Yes, Alwin, this certainly appears to be an old wood netsuke depicting a clam. Many times the clam represents a 'shunga' subject, but I'm not quite sure about this one.

Thank you Steam Collector. It wasn't until I was looking at the enlargements of the pictures I had taken, that I noticed what seemed to be some characters carved in the wood. Could this perhaps be a signature? I had to Google "shunga," but had wondered about that myself.

If you could post a clear photo of the characters, maybe someone here can decipher them.

I used the same camera and procedure as yesterday, and I get the message that "The specified file exceeds the maximum file size of 512,000KB." Does that mean I took too many pictures yesterday?

I'm not even sure these are characters. Thanks again.

Any photo posted in the forum has to be LESS than 500KB in size. You must reduce the size of your photos before uploading. Check your photo's dimensions, 54cm is way to much. 30cm is ideal.

Your photos are coming out too dark to be clearly see, brightening them would solve the problem.

Try photographing the signature perpendicularly.

Thanks for the help. I don't seem to be able to get my camera to make smaller pictures. I also had to use a paper shield to get the camera to focus in the same plane as the characters. The characters could be upside down, as well.

Hi Alwin. Definitely Shunga, and a fun little Netsuke but those marks do not look like a
signature to me, more so as they are in a dangerously exposed position.

Size is something.

Not kanji, either and accident or it could be teeth marks.
