Picked this up a few months back as just loved the detail, can't imagine how anyone has the patience,

It measures 1 inch long by about half an inch wide at max dimensions, hole at the top and bottom,

No makers marks or anything noticeable, but I can take some more photos if helpful,

Just wondering if anyone can advise what it is exactly, where made, material used (looks like some sort of nut shell), etc, I couldn't find anything similar on a quick trawl through the site,

Thanks for any help,

Welcome to the forum.

You couldn't find anything similar because it is not a netsuke or Japanese. It is just a mass produced Chinese tourist souvenir, sorry.

Here is what you've been looking for, just of a much higher artistry and quality, though...

Vlad, I hope you own those pieces. I don't have any carved walnuts. As they say in poker with those 5 photos: you've got the nut flush there.

Alan, unfortunately - not even one! But I keep looking.:)

I've just used this opportunity to demonstrate, how even quite primitive knock offs coming from inexperienced collectors may trigger some valuable learnings, if we may only want to...

Rather than repeating again and again (I even thought of starting a new Forum - Chinese Tourist Pieces of 20th Century and putting all those questions there without even answering them individually), we may actually go an extra step and try to demonstrate what a similar particular subject or style should look like instead. Isn't it what we were discussing of doing in some way or form some time ago?

Thanks for the replies, even though not 'authentic' still happy with it for a few pounds, will keep an eye out for more, hopefully of a better quality, but would still be happy with repros, if anyone can assist in this respect would be much appreciated,
