Thank you, Martyn. As I thought, just wasn't sure about the kimono color... :)

Frank, there is a thread here in the Lounge regarding mother of pearl netsuke--it probably is under materials. It might be of help to you.

HI Frank,
I have righted your image so that it can be viewed better. I would not be able to help you with this type of netsuke, as I don't really know what you look for when purchasing MOP. (I don't have any in my collection) If the eyes are truly inlaid, and not painted on, that might be a good sign. I know it is a sign of good craftsmanship in wood or ivory netsuke. -but I am not sure about anything regarding MOP. We do have someone who is knowledgeable regarding MOP in the Lounge-CalBear just recently gave a talk on MOP at a little mini gathering in California. Maybe he will see your image and let you know what he thinks of it.
I would insist on seeing the back of it however. The legs that are on that side of the body almost look like they were separate and attached. I would not like that, and the only way you will know is to ask to see the other side. Rule of thumb is never buy a netsuke without seeing all sides of it. It might not even have himotoshi, and then it would not be a netsuke.

There are more photos, it is carved all the way around, and the eyes are inlaid not painted. I can post the other images later tonight.

I would suggest that you post the images on their own thread so that Calbear and others can find it more readily.

I am sorry to say I find this piece to be all wrong. MOP should be a thin inner layer of the shell and this piece has girth to it, looks like stone. You can argue all you want about this, but my spidey senses are tingling.

Why spend $500 a week, why not wait a month or two and get a really good netsuke?

That is good advice, I'll post some pictures and poll others opinions. If the overarching theme aligns with yours I guess I'll pass on the piece.
