Am I correct to assume that the netsuke categorized as "marine ivory" [Hippo, walrus, sperm whale, et al] by Lempertz is not importable into the US?

Correct Matthew.

Clive - that looks suspiciously like a marine carving of a boar using wings to avoid border controls. What lengths will these little carvings go to!?

Matthew, to your Post #21, I was referring to the California state law, AB96, which goes into effect 7-1-16, not to US Federal law, which I do not believe (but am not absolutely sure without reviewing a lot of material) contains the same language, although certain marine ivories, like Narwhal, are indeed not importable or sale-able under Federal law. It is very hard to generalize here, as "marine ivory" is a term that covers a lot of types of materials.

Clive, I laughed over your "when pigs fly," comment.
It well illustrates my eternal optimist viewpoints vs. others who may not see the world through the same rose-colored glasses, as I do.

Thank you. Yes, Federal law was what I was seeking. I've asked the same question of Van Hamm regarding lots 2355 (Hippo Toad), 2443 (Hippo Fish) and 2445 (Walrus Carp) and will let you know when I get a response.

[Notwithstanding the accuracy of the saying, perhaps this picture is more apropos].

Excellence in netsuke art don't need signature or pedigree, or age, only quality, aesthetics, beauty.

Aha - but behold - this is Barakasus - the worlds wonder horse! Anything is possible apparently - evidenced by some laws flying backwards of late.

Onimh~ By providing the lot numbers you are interested in, it has effectively sent invitations to the bidding!

Unless I listed those to hide the ones I'm really interested in (pretty sneaky, huh).

Seriously though, I doubt anyone here is going to be bidding on those I listed simply because I expressed an interest.
