sorry for the delay, here are the bottm pictures.
even when inspecting the bottom very close, can not see anything but a homogenate very soft surface.

Never too late...
IMHO this pair of shishi is not a japanese netsuke and yes a cinese
carving...crude himotoshis and signatures are strong evidences...cinese traditon place two "lions" (shishis) as guards in the temple entrance...the wood base, if is the original base is other evidence that the two pieces was created more like "okimonos" than netsukes...other comments will be very welcome.
About the material, probably Vlad is right, hippo tooth.
Excellence in netsuke art don't need signature or pedigree, or age, only quality, aesthetics, beauty.
