Yes, your friend's opinion sounds about right, although I am not sure what the 'Republican' period refers to.
Walrus 'tusk' is probably more accurate than bone.

Size is something.

The Republican period in China covers 1912 to 1949 ,from the fall of the Quing dynasty to the final communist take-over under Chairman Mao.
