How to be notified via email: 3 - Receive an Email When a New Post or Topic is Submitted to a Forum

Postby souldeep » Tue Aug 15, 2017 12:11 pm

This is the third tutorial in a series on receiving email notifications.

The first tutorial can be found here - How to be notified via email: 1 - Receive Email to a Topic You've Posted in

The second tutorial can be found here - How to be notified via email: 2 - Receive an Email When a Topic You're Reading is Updated

Tutorial Synopsis

Are there whole forums you have specific interests in? For example you would like to be notified by email when any new posts or topics are created in the Subjects & Legends in Japanese Art forum? If so, this is the tutorial for you.

Step 1

Visit your User Control Panel (UCP).

Click on the Board preferences tab located at the top of the UCP.

Click on the link entitled Edit notification options displayed in red text in the following image.

You will see two options that you need to switch on to ensure your are emailed.

  • Someone replies to a topic to which you are subscribed. Click on the Email check box as encircled in green in the image above.
  • Someone creates a topic in a forum to which you are subscribed. Click on the Email check box as encircled in green in the image above.

By ticking both you ensure you receive an email on a new topic, or a new post. Make sure you save this new preference by clicking on the Submit button to complete the update.

Step 2

You now want to visit the forum(s) you wish to receive email updates on.

A forum is a container of many topics. To see a list of forums click on the Board index, encircled in green, in the following image.

Scroll down the board index page and click on a forum that you have a specific interest in. In this example I have chosen the Subjects & Legends in Japanese Art forum as encircled in green.

Conclusion & Notes

That's it. You will now receive emails whenever someone posts a new topic, or a post, in the forum you've subscribed to.

Just like on the old forum, you won't receive an email for every post under a topic - you will only receive the first reply on the topic, since your last visit. This is by design. You do not need 100 email notifications for the same topic, if there were 100 replies. You only need to be notified that there are replies to the topic. Then you know to visit the forum and catch up on the topic.

To unsubscribe from the forum simply click on the Unsubscribe forum link as encircled in green in the following image.
