Northern California Chapter Meeting on February 26th

Postby calbear » Wed Jan 18, 2017 7:24 pm

Just wanted to make all Forum participants aware of our first Northern California Chapter Meeting on Sunday February 26th .... The meeting will take place at Marsha Vargas Handley's home 2pm-5pm followed by dinner for those available to attend ... The agenda is as follows:

AGENDA
The Year of the Rooster (and other flying things) will be our focus:
- Welcome (Steve)
- New attendee intros
- June 2017 INS Convention in Cologne - details/updates (Marsha)
- Tentative Schedule of Future 2017 Meetings/Topics (group)
- Brief History of Chinese Horoscope and Relation To Japanese Culture (steve)
- The Rooster Sign in Detail (Chip)
- Things That Fly - A Show & Tell of Roosters, Other Birds, Other Flying Things - (group)
- Handling Session of Things That Fly (group)
- Show & Tell of Other New Acquisitions (group, as time allows)
- Conclusion, followed by dinner (location tbd)

Since limiting ourselves to just Roosters may be a bit constraining, ‘Things That Fly’ allows us to broaden our horizons to share many other parts of our collections … Use your imagination! ...

If you plan to be in the San Francisco area and would like to attend, please PM me and I can provide additional details ....

Thanks to Steve and Chip for organizing and presenting topics at yesterdays meeting. It was a great turn-out with SIX new attendees. Two LA chapter members, Nick and Dave B even flew in for the event and Anne and I drove 350 miles to be there. Special thanks also to Marsha for hosting in her lovely home. Rob Minz, new deputy Director of the SF Asian Arts Museum also attended his first meeting. Many of you will remember Rob from the Walters Gallery in Baltimore who greeted us there during the convention. Over 50 pieces relating to the year of the Rooster and Things That Fly were presented in the Powerpoint show and laid out for handling. Great presentations and wonder company with a nice meal after the formal meeting.

We could have used an extra hour or two of handling time.

And there were a few pieces for sale...and its Anne's birthday tomorrow. Maybe the 12.4cm stag antler Seiobo will give her some peaches of immortality.

It sounds like you had a really wonderful and fruitful meeting.

Congrats to you and Anne, Alan! And many-many more new peaches to both of you!

Alan, thanks for the great posts and recap of our meeting ... A couple of clarifications:

- we had a total of 19 attendees ... according to Marsha, it was the largest group in the SF area in 15-20 years ...
- for the handling session, we displayed about 50 pieces on a powerpoint presentation prior to handling ... but there were closer to 75 pieces available (some additions that we had no pictures of) .... It was a great assortment of styles, types, and quality and allowed for some great comparisons and discussion ...
- And thanks again to all who attended, especially those who traveled up to hundreds of miles (from Reno, Sacramento, LA) for the session ... We look forward to seeing all of you at our next meeting in the Fall ....

Thanks for sharing the experience of this very successful meeting of the INS Northern California Chapter!

I am hoping that we can put together an all-California meeting of both the INS Northern California Chapter and the INS Los Angeles (Southern California) Chapter later this year. The chances to meet new collectors and students in this field, to handle all kinds of netsuke and sagemono, and to learn and broaden your knowledge and experience, are some of the best opportunities of membership in the International Netsuke Society. And sharing this with the rest of us here is the next best thing to being there. Big Thanks!

Only just seen this thread. What a great meeting - sounds a real success by all accounts! Alan - driving 350 miles for a meeting - that's dedication to the Netsuke cause. Wished I could have been there. Thanks for sharing all the photos :)
