Rosemary's article on Horses in the Euronetsuke Journal got me to thinking about horses being tethered in stables which prevents them from lying down. I've had this slim model of a grazing horse for a while and due to the lack of himotoshi resigned myself to the fact it may just be an okimono. But around its midsection it seem a bit grooved and polished as if a cord may have been used there.
What do you think?

Alan,

Congratulations, I think you've come up with an excellent answer for an old mystery... why some of these beautiful horse netsuke seemed to be without a cord-attachment place.

Agreed. And why not?

Hyotan gourd Netsuke also use a cord round the waisted section. With horses kept in a stable, the meaning surely has this double nature. When the four legs are brought together though, I still think the strings must be imitating the ropes hobbling a horse outside on the plain. With yours Alan, perhaps the option was there!

This cord arrangement looks interesting Alan but I wonder if the netsuke would still be top heavy and tend to topple upside down when hung from the obi while attached to a sagemono?

That's a lovely horse Alan. Very much in my taste. The theory you suggest would also appear to work in practise. Why not attach a form of sagemono and test it out for us?

I thought adding weight would pull the legs outward but the body of the horse is pulled against the wearer so there is minimal effect. But it would be much more secure if the cords were knotted around the horse instead of the simple loop I used here.

I have the feeling that you are right, Alan, about the legs being pulled outward with the loop as in the photo. However, if the loop was done the same way, just at the front side of the netsuke, I think that the legs would be pulled inward, towards the obi.

And regardless, beautiful netsuke :)

A bit late to the fair here, but had to say I also love your horse Alan. Beautiful wood carving. I think the cord around the horses body makes perfect sense and seems that it would sit pretty securely that way. No matter what, a real beauty in my book and as Martin said, very much my taste in netsuke! Thanks for sharing him!

I have not yet seen either of the journals, as I was on a huge road trip about the time they would have been sent. I just this past week got a new mailing address, and my friend will forward my mail now . Can’t wait to read the mentioned articles!
