First Contemporary Netsuke

Postby netsuke(enthusiast) » Sat Sep 16, 2017 7:04 pm

Hello, this is my first Contemporary Netsuke. It depicts Mr, Bushell as the Buddha with long draping ears. In addition, it shows his favorite netsuke, the Kaigyokusai crane floating in the distance. This netsuke won "Best use of materials" at a Netsuke Kenkyukai Society convention. Please correct my if I am wrong, but I believe this to be the only netsuke to depict a collector. I love the gold inlayed crane in the background.

Very creative piece! Say a little more about the artist, Al Walters, if you know.
Thanks for sharing

Thank you, the creativity drew me to this. From my knowledge, he was a jeweler who made netsuke in his spare time. He submitted this work, and won the materials award.

I'm sure there are members of the INS who were at this event. I would love to hear if they saw this netsuke/ thoughts on it

But it is a fair likeness (caracture) of Raymond.
I don't know the metal artist.. Clive or Doug, do you? Did Bob Kinsey come up with the idea for this event?

Chicago 1993? Yeah I was there. Yes.. the carving competition was I believe one of Kinsey's ideas but was very contentious and hardly any carvers were willing to participate. In fact I think there was a bit of row about it.. it certainly was never held at future conventions. I don't remember seeing this carving or have any idea who Al Walters is... sorry.

Thank you for feedback! I am assuming he is depicted as the Buddha to show his immense knowledge in netsuke. The crane is also a nice touch!

Alan, I would agree. It does resemble Mr. Bushell a lot
