Quoting from another Members Post

Postby souldeep » Sat Apr 02, 2016 7:30 pm

There are occasions when you might wish to reply to, or part of, another members post.

In this situation it is likely the post you wish to respond to is on another page, or higher up the topic page. In these situations it is advised that you select the post or question you wish to directly respond to and quote it in your own post. This will allow other members reading the topic to understand who and what you are responding to.

Step 1 - To quote from another members post you need to find the post you want to respond to and click on the quote icon ". An example of the icon to use is circled in green in the following image.

On clicking on the quote Icon you will be taken to the post editor with the content of the post you selected already populated in the editor. The text of the message you have quoted from will be positioned between two quote tags. The opening quote tag will also include the members name so other members will understand who you are quoting. The second tag is to close the quote. In the following image you can see an example of the opening and closing tag's circled in green.

Step 2 - At this point you add your reply text below the quote tags as highlighted in blue the next image example, then click submit.

You will be taken back to the original topic page and see your new message posted, displaying the members quote, and your response.

Alternative Step 2 - Edit the text quoted - In the case of quoting from larger posts you may want to pick out just a small part of the members original message to reply to in the case of say, a question in the original post. To do this replay Step 1 which will take you back to the post editor. You then need to select the text you want to remove from between the quote tags. In the following image you will note I have replied to the same post as shown in Step 1. But on this occasion I have deleted all but once sentence from the quote. My reply then asks a question about that one sentence I have chosen to quote. Click on the submit button and your post will be live for the members to read.

Alternative Step 2 - Multi response to the text quoted - You may also want to reply to a number of areas in one post as there may be multiple points on which you wish to respond. In this case you would again repeat Step 1. The next step is to copy and paste the area of the quote you wish to respond to into separate blocks. You will need to make sure that on each area you are writing a reply to you wrap the original message in the quote tags as circled in green below.

Click on the Submit button and your post will then appear on the forum as follows.
