Hello, this small Fugu netsuke style okimono was carved by my grandfather. He is an artist by trade but this was his first attempt at making a netsuke style object. Material is buffalo horn, with eyes of double inlayed white amber with black horn.
Hello Alan, he carved it during the duration of the summer. I had some buffalo horn and gave it too him as a carving material. He loves the fugu theme, and we chose it as the theme for this carving. He next plans on making a netsuke out of a chunk of mother of pearl I gave him.
Hello Peter.. I hope your grandfather is using really good dust extraction when working with buffalo horn and in the future Mother of Pearl as they are some of the most dangerous materials to inhale as fine particle dust... especially that generated from a small "dremel" type tool. Even a small amount of the dust can have serious health consequences especially on the elderly. Other than that.. a nice fugu.
