Postby raoux » Sat Jun 17, 2017 6:43 pm

Hi all, i'm new on this forum. I carved netsuke since about 10 years, and for the first time, i came at a INS convention, in Cologne. Only one word: wonderfull. Collectors and carvers and dealers, a very nice world to meet.
Some views of my netsuke.

Dear Serge,

Welcome to the forum and I'm glad you have decided to share with the community here :)

It was lovely to meet you in Cologne, and to also appreciate the work you shared. By all accounts the contemporary evening was really well received and the feedback from the evening has been really positive.

I find the piece you've just shared reminiscent of H R Giger - are you a fan?

What elements in this work do you feel are Japanese inspired?

Welcome, Raux.
The turbin type shell is very realistic. What is the material?

Alan, hard to believe. It's of boxwood. There were also rusty iron locks and oil cans from boxwood to admire.

I'm a fan of Giger. The netsuke is inspired by a painting of Salvadore Dali. For me, this netsuke say that man belong to earth, he can't leave it.

i try to carve netsuke with a european inspiration. Sometimes, my inspiration is similar as japanese carver, sometimes it's stricktly european. For me, netsuke are not a simply object, it's a way to show what you think about the world, the life or the religion, it's a message, a cultural message. My message is coming from french culture, i can't "talk" like a japanese people.

Thanks... Giger was inspired by Dali to. It has a very surreal element to it. I wondered if it was a Giger/Dali tengu :D

Hi Serge, the contemporary carvers event was one of the highlights of the convention for me! I loved your Dragon Inro set, would you share a photo of it? I couldn't believe it was boxwood and not iron, your ability to create surfaces is amazing!!!
