Polishing work is the most difficult part in this case, octopus has a lot of suckers. I used a lot of different sandpapers and traditional Japanese powders as Tsunoko, Toishi-ko and Dosuri-ko, I've bought and used these powders for Maki-e, now I have no possibility to do Maki-e because my twins of 4 years each are everywhere and Urushi lacquers are not for little kids. Let's see polishing, to see is easier than to polish! ;)

Natasha...full agree with Piers, only admiration and love for you and talent... I believe is a gift that only few people receive, you are the one ..observing the step by step of your octopus is a surprise after surprise...and the noble precious material with his transparency...
A curiosity, which model you got to look at the anatomical details of the animal, from reality?...
Excellence in netsuke art don't need signature or pedigree, or age, only quality, aesthetics, beauty.

Dear Natasha,

As you might have noticed, I have been following your posts very 'religiously' :) .

I very much enjoyed following your photos and explanations about the process of creating this amazing octopus.

The photos of the translucent carving were really stunning !

Hope that you will share with us more of your beautiful carvings, and the process of making them.

Thank you !
Alex

Hi Natasha - thank you for sharing the breakdown of how you are working. It is inspiring and educational for us laymen.

My favourite explanation so far has been the eyes. I was surprised how you achieved that. I would have never guessed that a pupil is stuck in then cut and smoothed afterwards. I had images of carvers creating small eyes (yes very fiddly) and then inserting them afterwards. Your approach now makes sense.

You mentioned the tools you use have a personal meaning for you. Was your father a carver too?
