Bamboo Pipe Case

Postby HLH » Wed Dec 27, 2017 12:57 pm

This is I belive a everyday use pipe case. Its hollow and ca 2,5 cms wide, 21 cms long. Made of bamboo.
Back is plain and front carved with a fish and some sea grass. The case have a nice patina and a black inside.
I like to hear some opinion on this item.

Henrick, you have described it very well.
The himotoshi holes are begging for some string and a tobacco tonkotsu to hang from them, and the large hole wants a corresponding Kiseru to recreate its original function and appearance. In my humble opinion of course!

Thanks Piers!

You are reliable as the "humble" Clock in Greenwich :) :) :)
I'm always enjoying reading your informative comments.
I've added some accessories to the case, but my pipe is the wrong size.
Pipes have been used for a very long time - how old could this one be?

Henrick, quote: "Pipes have been used for a very long time - how old could this one be?"........ Which pipe?

Japanese kiseru pipes are smaller but similar in style to those used in China, Korea, Mongolia etc. There is plenty of information out there on the internet.

Keep searching until you find one that fits your kiseru-zutsu comfortably. Look for a 'pure silver' stamps 純 and 銀 (Jun-gin), usually split like that, one on each front and rear section of your pipe, if you are not confident in judging weighty solid silver. Some people will charge a high price for a silver pipe, so do not buy the first one you see; go for brass in the meantime. Tobacco was only smoked in the last four hundred years after it was introduced to the west from north America, so your pipe holder will be less than that, and quite possibly late Edo or Meiji/Taisho.

Orientations has a beautiful silver pipe on the inside cover of the INS Journal that just arrived today. When your journal arrives look at it closely. It's likely too fat for your otoshi-zutsu though so you just saved a bunch of money. Piers is right when he suggests a brass pipe for this set.

I'll follow your advice trying to find a suitable pipe in brass.

And Piers, sorry, I ment the small pipe.

Henrik, your attachment seems to show an antler tine. Are you referring to this as a "small pipe"?

Yes, the tine is hollow and there are "silver" rings recessed at both ends. I have take some better pics of it.

Prehistoric American Indians used tube pipes, some beautifully carved of slate, but I've never seen a Japanese tube pipe. I thought the antler might be a netsuke but no himotoshi or ring shown in your attachment.

Its about 10 cms long and some stain. As soon as I get it back, I'll post some more detailed photos.
