In the Japanese version of Karl M Schwarz’s Netsuke Subjects, Kikujido is listed under 中国の伝説上の人物 = ‘Chinese Legendary Figures’.
Here is the photo and the explanation. Translation to follow.

"Warrior boy retainer to Boku-O (in Japanese) King of Western Zhou in China. Having made made some terrible *mistake he was sent into exile. For solace, in order not to forget a verse of scripture taught to him by the king, he wrote it time and time again on petals of chrysanthemum flowers. Kikujido carries a bunch of chrysanthemums and a calligraphy brush. 19th C. Mei, Masayuki, 4.3 cm." p.60

I also read elsewhere on the J net that he drank the dew of wild chrysanthemums, attained 不老不死 (Furo-Fushi = no old age, no death = immortality) and became a Sennin.

Kikujido is also the title of a Noh Song.

* Crossed/Stepped over the King's pillow?
