Inherited Netsuke. Need your opinions please.

Hello,

I recently inherited a collection of Netsuke from grandmother. Most pieces came with appraisal documents, except for these 7 pieces. I am curious of values of each piece in current market and would appreciate your opinions.

I have attached the photos and hand-written descriptions from grandmother below. Thank you much!

1) Mouse: ivory signed Tomoichi. Somewhat modern carving, mouse with tail tucked between front paws, chewing on something. 1966--$65. See signature p.233 of Contemporary Netsuke by Miriam Kinsey. Signature that of Yukimasa who signed his animals Tomoichi

2) Fukurokuju: seated male figure, god of knowledge with is deer. Ivory signed Ko-sen. 1970--$35

3) Rabbit: ivory signed Masakatsu. Inlaid eyes. 1966--$65

4) Seated Cat: ivory, color used on this one. Signed Akitsugu. $56 in 1975

5) Crane or Swan: ivory, signed Minichi. 1966--$37

6) Horse: ivory, signed Genichi (can also be read Motokazu). 1965--$21

7) Boy: ivory signed Ichiro. Ivory is colored. See figure 82 of Contemporary Netsuke by Kinsey. 1965--$55.

Kansui Merman

Here is a contemporary Netsuke by Kansui that I thought you might like to see. I posted it once, but removed it right away. I only have three contemporary pieces--a Kansui, a Ryushi, and a Kangyoku (that is Questionable). I love Kansui's merman---his eyes are beautiful and so penetrating, he seems alive! Thought you would enjoy seeing him! jbj

wooden monkey signed in mother of pearl

Hi all , Can anybody please tell me if this carved monkey is an original or a copy , and what the signiture is please.
It does seem to be of very good quality , The signiture is on mother of pearl.

Sansha 三車

Can anyone help me narrow down the period in which this Netsuke artist Sansha 三車 worked?

One source (Ueda Reikichi) says the beginnings of Netsuke to 1700, another (Ito Ryoichi) says he worked in wood in the middle of the old period, ie 1700-1800.

The name seems to reflect the three vehicles (goat, deer and ox cart) that the Buddha likened to his three great teachings, the Three Vehicles.

Much obliged for any information, even to say he is not in such and such a work. My reference library is still very limited. Thank you.

Inherited 6 netsukes-need advice please

Hello, I inherited 6 netsukes form my parents estate. I'd like to know what material they are made from, if you can tell from the photos. I know one is wood and one is jade, I think. I also would like an idea of how old they are. Two of them have turning faces. Thanks for your help.

Well, back on the island, and netsuke in hand, I have taken a couple pictures today! Chonchon, here is the puppy I promised you. He is not signed, and the size is 3cmX2cm. His eyes are inlaid. Is he close to the size of yours? I just knew this was small, but had never thought of it as a child's netsuke. Let me know what you think!

Anraku or no?

I wonder if anyone out there can give me some insight on this netsuke. A fox hunter that I found humorous, as it is carved similar to how we see the rat catcher. The fox hunter tried to catch the fox under his hat, but it escaped across his back! It is signed Anraku, and although the color of the stain seems to be in keeping with the anraku of note, I am not sure it is his. I love the carving of the hat, and the back of the netsuke, and really like the himotoshi! I am not as fond of his face, and his hands and feet are a little small and not in proportion with the rest of his body. Is there someone there who can comment? I hope so! thanks ahead of time! jbj

Hi all!
I bought this gamma sennin (I believe) last year, and was wondering what your opinion is. These are photos I took when I first purchased him, and I need to get better ones, I know. He is not signed, about 3 inches tall, and a beautiful patina that does not show up on these pictures. One foot has been repaired. I saw a similar netsuke in one of my books, and wondered if it could have been the same carver. What can you tell me about him? Thanks ahead of time! jbj

okimono style netsuke

I just found this sight!!! HOW NEAT! I would love to know what you think of this netsuke. I found it in an antique mall last year, and although the carving is a little crude, I really enjoy having it. It is large--I don't have it with me, but my guess is about 2 inches in all directions. Very humorous as all 7 of these fishermen have traps and ropes around a shell that is too large to be contained! They have flasks of some drink in their hands, and I am guessing the loss of one hand was holding such a drink. It is very deeply carved--even inside the large shell, you can see the body of the fisherman inside. There are a few age cracks, but it seems to be holding its own. I know the" ring around the himotoshi" story, and yet it feels like a keeper. What do you think? Thanks for all your time and information! this is a really neat sight---must be one of those best kept secrets!

I have admired netsuke for quite some time but
just recently started collecting and found this
great site! Know very little about judging the
quality, telling bone from ivory, etc. but I do
know what I like and that is what I go on if it is
in my (bottom-feeder) price range. That is a nice
attraction of the netsuke, you can find attractive
and well carved pieces in most any price range
and even in the newer Chinese versions if you
are not a purist.
So here are my first acquisitions, all via ebay.
Appreciate any comments, especially regarding
material and age.
