Re: A Pesky Rabbit

Good morning, Curt, Lots of comments already for you to dive into. I haven't read everything posted to this as I am short on time this morning. However I do want to say just simply, that this is a keeper in my book. A very nice early stag antler composition. I haven't looked at all the images at len...

Re: Copy?

Giles, When you actually have this in hand you will be able to tell more than you can from images. I have navigated all over this, and I see many areas in question, some on the shoulder that look like filler has been used. Down the nose and around the eyes, the carving seems rough at close range,in ...

Re: Copy?

Giles, Thank you for sharing your new acquisition. I believe that your carving is a later copy. When I zoomed in closely, I could see that some of the detail carving looks a little unfinished and it lacked the patina and smoother surface that age would allow it. Also some heavy areas of stain that w...

Re: Chon's Reflections

Thanks for sharing Piers- It looks like a huge key! is it or is it just the format of the image that makes it look so large? Neat items in that image that invite inspection! :)

Re: Shokasai gold lacquer inro

Jordi, Congratulations on your acquisition. It is a beautiful inro, and the story adds depth to the vision. Thanks so much for sharing it. I am slow to purchase inro, and so far have but one in porcelain. I do hope to add another specific one, but so far it has eluded me. Do you have several inro, a...

Re: Another Shishi

Hi Curt, I'm very late to the party this time, but I had to say Kudos on this nice old shishi! It's a really good honest netsuke! And now, you have an article by Neil to look forward to also! It not only will add to your knowledge but also provide background for this netsuke. All this information sh...

Re: Favorite Finds of 2017

Hi Chris! Thanks for all the information that you have reposted here. You always bring so much to the table, so glad to see you again!. Your quail on millet is very striking! -- you did not call it a netsuke--is it an Okimono? How tall is it?

Re: See if I'm learning anything - figure with two children

Okimono style netsuke sometimes do have himotoshi, and the term Okimono style refers to the size and shape of the carving, which make you think it is meant to be sitting on a table and not hanging. You are moving in the right direction though. I liked that you wondered how it would hang as a netsuke...

Re: A Confused Sage

Morning Curt, Sorry to say I agree with Piers on this -there are several things that put up a warning sign to me - The black sumi ink or paint in the eyes and brows is one thing that shuts me down a requires closer examination. Again, the rings around the himotoshi signals 20C tourist piece. Not so ...
