Re: Ceramic netsuke

Thank you Alison. I really love your little puppy. And yes, I also am certain that the molded puppy is smooth, and the hair detail, and possibly even detail around the eyes and mouth are added individually, Unique to each molding. That makes yours very special. This puppy has his own personality and...

Re: An appealing netsuke

Raoux,
I really like this netsuke of an old rusty lock.. It is ingeniously done, displaying all the ways different materials age, some rusty, some corroded, some cracked--really very nice! Congratulations, and I hope you enjoy your first show!

Re: Junishi

My gosh, what a great litter of pups out there. Reinhard, yours a very special crew with Mother looking happy with her three pups. As Klaus says, rare indeed! And, what I love about the mom and one pup is a more intimate look at motherhood, and also an opportunity to have a more compact shape which ...

Re: Advice on Purchase

The bottom is a telltale thing, with it being so plain and the feet and toes contained within a circle- very different from all my other toads that are completely finished on the bottom as well. I know there is at least one other collector with a similar toad-can't remember who--I don't think they a...

Re: Some light reading for the coffee break

What a great story, Klaus! It's stories like these that are a treasure! I know I have seen at least one other love letter netsuke. It didn't look like this one. The letters were very white and staggered so you could see the edges of many letters at an angle to each other. I thought it was Ryushi's b...

Re: Advice on Purchase

Hi Greg, We have something in common--I have a toad that might at least be from the same school as your toad. Mine is not signed - is yours? I just got mine a couple of years ago from an auction. It was owned for many years by the Princess of Hessen in Germany. I will have to look up the other info-...

Re: Advice on Purchase

Hi Greg, and welcome! I have enjoyed the read here, and good to see humor is alive and well in this collecting arena! I certainly agree that one really nice purchase can put us in a hold pattern for awhile! Good luck with the bake sale, and I certainly would add the lemonade stand! Diversification i...

Re: Tachi Kake Signature

We are so fortunate to have folks here that together can sleuth these things out. Doug, like me, sees the artistic elements of men's protective gear, and he feels that kanji have been implemented in its design. Kikue and Piers with their knowledge of Japanese, can find the stylized kanji and possibl...

Re: Junishi

Klaus, your dog has a seemingly tall stance, it is hard to envision it as a small child's netsuke. He has some power about him. I wish there was more written about this category of small netsuke. They are beautifully carved. Your dog is a great example! Do you have other small netsuke? I have a few ...
