Re: Identification Help Needed

ChrisM, Viewing this carving on my laptop, a larger image reveals grain on the bottom and also on the shoulder. It seems to me it is a quick careless 20C carving done in mass to make a quick dollar by Korean or other Asian carvers using poached elephant ivory, which is illegal. This is not Japanese ...

Re: Netsuke or Okimono?

Hi and welcome. Years ago, I came across one of these old wood carvings, and was very excited to find it. I didn't purchase it, scared off by collectors who had doubts about its authenticity. I don't know a lot about these or what it would take to find out truly how old it is. There are a couple of ...

Re: Few newcomer

Peter, whoever the carver, this is a lovely netsuke with beautiful details. The finish to the wood is exquisite, and I love the deep tone of it. Congrats!

Re: Trying to identify by signature

Here is my file page on this carver along with one of the two netsuke I purchased when I first began collecting. The informatio...

Re: Euronetsuke Fest 2018: 11th - 13th May 2018

Thanks, Adam, for the images and report on the gathering in London. It only increases my disappointment on missing it! Sounds like a great time for all. Thank you for the images as well. The lovely bird still is my favorite of all the netsuke that I have seen images of. A lovely carving with a great...

Re: Hope this is not a NLO

Although there are some authentic netsuke that are flatter than others, generally speaking, netsuke are carved in 3-d - even on the bottom. So there would be more variation in the depth of the carved area, with good detail on his feet, folds in his clothing, etc. Some netsuke might have a figure sit...

Re: Hope this is not a NLO

It is good that you recognize the face on this carving, as it might mean that you are beginning to understand a look of facial detail that is 20c and forward, and generally nlo. Looking at the subject matter however, the man may be grinding ginger or some other spice.

It sounds like I missed a great weekend, and really regret the timing wasn't so that I could comfortably make the trip.. So sorry to have missed it though! Thanks much for sharing your experiences and images. Looking forward to seeing more from others of this great netsuke adventure!

Re: Hippocampus/Seahorse

This netsuke is utilizing the S-curve concept in an ingenious way, where the curve is present from all angles. It is very pleasing to the eye, simplified and begs to be handled! Congratulations!
