Re: Euronetsuke Fest 2018: 11th - 13th May 2018

Hi, I just wanted to add my thanks for an amazing festival. I was only able to come on the Friday but was warmly welcomed and had a great time. I am new to netsuke, having only learned about the art form last august and I learned more in one day than I have in the last 9 months! Martyn, your organis...

Re: Help reading signature

Piers, that's amazing - please thank your wife and thank you for mentioning it to her! Now the issue is finding a carver of similar netsuke called Gyokushin... the hunt continues :)

Re: Any idea what subject this is?

Hi Klaus, I can definitely see similarities in the two pieces and it looks like the one I’ve pictured is a poor copy of your one. It's like comparing a Hershey Bar and a Belgian Chocolate - they are both technically chocolate, but one is so much superior to the other that it's almost criminal to des...

Re: Help reading signature

Thanks Piers and John - very useful, I hadn't thought that the first two characters could actually be one character. I just looked at the mei under a microscope and it does indeed look like the first two characters are joined by a weak line - sadly I can't photograph this, but I've made a butchered ...

Help reading signature

Dear Forum, I've recently posted about this netsuke in the Subjects and Legends thread but as this is a signature specific question I'm posting a new thread here. Below is a photo of the signature I'm trying to read which I have deciphered as "Kyu-ichi-shin” from the three kanji but I couldn’t ...

Re: Any idea what subject this is?

Many thanks Piers, Alan and John for your thoughts – I hadn’t heard of Tennins and Tennyos before and having now looked at a few I think she is definitely a Tennyo. I spent last night looking up Fuujin, Emma-O and Nio and having seen the okimono below, of Nio with a Tennyo that has so many similarit...

Re: Any idea what subject this is?

Ok, typical, you spend hours searching and find nothing then ten minutes after you post you get a lead...I've just seen a netsuke of Nio that looks similar - could this possibly be a depiction of Nio? Could the woman be Kannon?

Any idea what subject this is?

Dear Forum, Below are some photos of a netsuke in my collection that I’ve been trying to research but have had real trouble finding anything similar to determine the story depicted. I thought maybe the main character is an oni having its arm tended to but that doesn’t seem right so any and all thoug...

Re: Is this actually a signature??

Thank you Jan and Piers for your sage words - I hope that as I learn more, more will be revealed. I think one of the main things that draws me to netsuke is the detective work and with each dead end, a little disappointment but also a feeling that you like the netsuke a little more for being so elus...
