Rob, I don’t know if you’ve come across this in your research but the pair of scrolls below were recently exhibited at the BM Hokusai exhibition and may provide some insight into the origins of the design. Piers, thanks for the further details on squirrels and grapes. I don't read Japanese, but will paste in a summation from Jirka-Schmitz, The World of Netsuke 2005, which is helpful especially for the budo ni rissu play on words. I love your dragon inro Thanks Judy, lovely to hear the view of an artist and how you look at art and analyse it. Look forward to seeing everyone else's best bits of 2017.
