Re: New in my collection not sure about character

A group reminiscent of Oni - Shoki.
One sees the typical familiar Chinese shoki robe, but all related shoki attributes are missing: beard, hat and sword.
Is it artistic freedom or is there another story behind it?

Re: Favorite Finds of 2017

Addendum after weight determination.
At this netsuke Tametaka used a particularly light and therefore soft wood (hinoki?) In contrast to the woods he used otherwise.
Consequently, it was intended at the beginning to hardening it by lacquer/paint.
Therefore one can conclude that ......

Re: Favorite Finds of 2017

The Netsuke arrived yesterday and I am particularly excited about the lacquering. In the catalog "Eccentrics in Netsuke" by Paul Moss the number 51 shows a very similar piece, but without lacquering. I can not imagine that one could produce my piece by a subsequent over-laquering of the Mo...

Re: Favorite Finds of 2017

In conclusion Probably the last find in 2017. I bought this Netsuke on Saturday the 30th of December 2017 at 4 pm in an auction in Germany. A wasp nest with two wasps. Signed TAMETAKA. I have already seen three Netsuke with this motif by Tametaka. But this is the only lacquered Tametaka I know. 1431...

Re: Chon's Reflections

Funny, during our last visit to Kyoto in September it was the other way around.
We wanted to visit the Kyoto National Museum, but it was closed for renovation.
We then went to the opposite Sanjusangendo temple.
A change that we do not regret. Really a highlight.

Re: Bamboo Pipe Case

It's probably not a pipe, but a cigarette holder.

Re: First Contemporary Netsuke

Martyn I'm waiting to see if that collector will commission another piece but this one incorporating him in a shunga scene. I can see his face on an Oni body lurking around Okame's bathtub. Alan, not a good idea. First one, then two, then three ...... In the end I only have self-portraits :lu...

Re: Foreigner

This painted bone carving (height 4.3 cm) I bought in India about 40 years ago as a souvenir.
With a drilled hole in the base I could attract a lot of attention in the forum.

Re: Reading signatures

It's not a NLO (Netsuke Like Object). The important Himotoshi are missing!
