Re: Our dear friend LUBlub

Luigi's attitude in collection was much informed by his motto " Excellence in netsuke art don't need signature or pedigree, or age, only quality, aesthetics, beauty.". Testimony to this was his support for many of the contemporary artists, like the commission of a set of the Junishi by Kan...

Re: Is this a rakan or a Sennin?

Dear friends, thanks for your warm welcome and expert opinions. In the meantime I myself did some further research and ended up by a very similar piece in the Bushell-collection: "familiar and unfamiliar netsuke", p. 104, nr. 84. Many thanks and best regards, Walter. You're welcome here, ...

Re: Hello all and help with identification and dating

Indeed, Chris, the second figure seems a bit better ... The signature is a bit better than the scribble that we see so often on NLOs, although it seems a bit too big overall and the kakihan in light red is not very successful. The signature might be read as "Shuzan". 秀 (Hide, Shu ) 山 (San,...

Re: Identification Help

Hi Gregory, Robert O. Kinsey writes about the subject of pieces like yours in an article about monkey netsuke in Kenkyukai Journal 12/2 : 21-22 : "For most netsuke enthusiasts, one of the most delightful portrayals of a monkey shows the seated animal , clad in a happi coat and sometimes wearing...

Re: Subject of this piece

You're welcome ;-) This may be a nice occasion for other members to share their Hidemasa examples ? It may prove not so easy to tell - from pictures alone - which of the Hidemasa artists made this piece. Handling the piece may give more pointers, but it is not always something that can be stated wit...

Re: Subject of this piece

Hi Dhiman, thank you for adding more pictures ! the signature reads "Hidemasa" , an artist of the Osaka school. It has some of the typical feaures - like the patterns on the robe and the bottom of the footwear - that we see often on netsuke signed Hidemasa. Also, the irregular reserve in w...

Re: Subject of this piece

Hello Dhiman,

thank you for posting this carving.
would you be able to provide a few more pictures of your piece, from the bottom, the back and maybe one in your hand, so that our members can have an idea of the size ? Thanks in advance !

Re: Signature or not

Hi Bryko, the powerful plasticity of the works by the referenced "Rokko" is very spectacular and expressive. On first sight, from your picture, I would doubt that your carving can be attributed to this great artist's hand ... Here are a few examples, some of which Neil has owned/posted. Do...

Re: Who are they?

Hi Henrik,

here are a few pages from Meinertzhagen Card Index, which may give some context on which one of the Masayuki carvers your piece may be attributed to.
Surprising is that a blind masseur piece with same signature is the subject of one of the cards ;-)

Re: PM's not being sent

Dear Doug,
The Forum message service works like that : messages that you send will remain in the "Outbox" until the addressee opens it : at that point the message is migrated to the "Sent Messages" Folder.
