Re: Shokasai gold lacquer inro

Thanks Piers and yes, now that you mention it, she does look like she could be finishing off the woven cloth with gold thread rather than weaving. Very astute observing! Could it be poetic licence on the part of Shokasai to show the lady in this manner rather than weaving itself and I note your comm...

Re: Shokasai gold lacquer shibayama inro

Very interesting Alan and thanks for your comments. When you say ivory inlay was available on paper sheets, I assume you mean similar to the flowers and other small ivory pieces on the inro. Were coral and shell inlay also available in this manner and were there workshops with carvers churning out t...

Re: Shokasai gold lacquer inro

Thanks for your comments Carlomagno and Souldeep I'm glad you both like this inro. That is a very poetic vision you portray Carlomagno, I like it! Shokasai was considered to be in the top rank of lacquer artists during the late 18th/early 19th centuries so I was very pleased to be able to acquire th...

Shokasai gold lacquer inro

A lenticular gold lacquered four-case inro bearing a kinji ground, decorated with the 'Heavenly Weaver' working at a loom, while Toei (Dong Yong) stands on the reverse beside spools of yarn, inlaid with ivory. The inro is signed Shokasai, is 9.5cm high and comes with a really nice ivory ojime lacque...

A small boy with a crane is shown on the other side, again under a spreading pine tree and clouds. The interior is al...

Re: Lacquered ashtray netsuke

Thanks for your comments Alan & Piers. Yes, I've seen ishime-ji on Tsuba, Fuchi Kashira and other sword fittings. It's a very attractive finish as is ishime-nuri as a lacquer finish on wood. The photos were taken under a spotlight to highlight the surface detail and the lacquered plants and plum...

Lacquered ashtray netsuke

Adding to my collection of lacquered Japanese artwork is this ashtray netsuke. The wood exterior is lacquered in ishime-nuri style while the interior bowl and peg are copper. Ishime-nuri is a textured lacquer technique which uses coarse kanshitsu-fun to create a stone like texture. Around the circum...
